NEW MOTORWAY SECTIONS IN CROATIA

Since the end of June 2003, visitors to Croatia traveling by car to the coast can get to their destinations faster and easier. The first sections of the new motorways that are being built according to the Government's intensive motorway plan, decided upon in 2001, have been opened. In order to get to your destination easier and faster, find out the sections' names and when they were opened. We urge you to pay special attention to critical points. We wish you a pleasant journey!

The most important section is definitely the one leading towards the south. The Gornja Ploca-Zadar II along with the recently built Udbina-Gornja Ploca state road makes traveling from Zagreb to Zadar 90 minutes shorter. The most significant part of this section is 5.670 meter long Sv. Rok tunnel.
2 other sections on the Rijeka-Zagreb and Zagreb-Split motorways (Vukova Gorica-Bosiljevo I and Bosiljevo I - Mala Kapela) have also been opened, totaling 46 km. Taking into consideration the Vrbovsko-Kupjak section on the Rijeka-Zagreb motorway, a journey from Zagreb to Rijeka takes on average up to 2 hours.
In 2003, 150 km of new motorway sections will be opened in Croatia, while Croatian Motorways Company (HAC) will re-asphalt 100 km of existing motorways out of 200 km that need to be repaired. By 2005, Croatia will have a total of 1365 kilometers of motorways. The construction of the Zagreb-Split motorway should be finished by 2005, while the motorway to Dubrovnik is expected to be finished by 2008.

Length of the Breznicki Hum - Novi Marof section amounts to 9,5 km
and was opened on 24.06.2003.

NOVI MAROF - VARAZDIN SECTION
Length of the Novi Marof-Varazdin section amounts to 13,64 km
and its construction should be completed by 30.11.2003.

MOTORWAY CRITICAL POINTS
We kindly urge drivers to observe traffic signs and to drive within speed limits in order to avoid traffic accidents.

ZAGREB-SPLIT MOTORWAY
The critical point is Sv. Rok tunnel, where the road is two-lane, meaning that it changes from a four-lane motorway to a two-lane semi-motorway, having one lane for each direction. After exiting the southern side of Sv. Rok tunnel, there are some 4 kilometers of straight road towards Maslenica. After exiting Celinka tunnel (third in a row when traveling from Zagreb), there is a large curve and afterwards (after two kilometers and Baricevic viaduct) a sharp right curve. From Sv. Rok tunnel to the sharp curve after Baricevic viaduct, the speed limit is 80 kilometers per hour. We urge drivers to obey the speed limit not only due to the road configuration but also due to strong and sudden winds (Bura wind) common in the area.

RIJEKA-ZAGREB MOTORWAY The critical points on the Vrbovsko-Kupjak section of the Rijeka-Zagreb motorway are some 100 meters before Cardak tunnel, where the motorway turns into a two-lane road, as well as when exiting Pod Vugles tunnel and entering Javorova Kosa tunnel that are only some sixty meters apart.
