| | Sv. Juraj (Senj)
| | | | Sveti Juraj, a small place and harbor on the coast of the Velebit channel, is 10 km south of Senj, placed in a shallow and well-protected bay with a large beach. Besides the beach in the place itself, there are several great beaches in the Raca, Zrnovica, Azic-Lokva, Lukovo, Klada Donja and Starigrad Donji bays. Sveti Juraj is placed at the foot of the Velebit mountain range, known for its strong wind - "bura" (north-eastern), while there are numerous springs with drinkable water in the vicinity. Sveti Juraj is ideal for a quiet holiday, away from the hustle and bustle of big cities and we recommend it to hikers and mountain climbers because Velebit is the largest and longest Croatian mountain. Paklenica, part of Velebit, has been proclaimed a national park.
We recommend: ruins of the prehistoric settlement Lopsice above Jurjevo / a 12th century Benedictine monastery / the Gothic church St. Philip and Jacob / Starigrad / The Paklenica National Park / the botanical gardens on Velebit / Stirovaca, an 8 km long and 1 km wide valley, surrounded by cliffs up to 1500 m high
How to get there: 10 km south of Senj at the crossroad of the main road (Rijeka - Zadar) and the Sveti Juraj - Krasno - Otocac regional road
Did you know: that the religious monuments near Jurjevo are the most important monuments of Gothic architecture at the foot of Velebit / Velebit is home to the endemic plant - Degenia velebitica. |
