The island lavender and heather honey, olive oil, and citrus fruits will do your body good. VISIT THE CITY OF HVAR Besides health benefits and natural beauties, the city of Hvar is famous for its cultural heritage. The biggest main square in Dalmatia (an area of 4500m2), with many renaissance and baroque palaces, dominates the city which is surrounded by fortification walls dating from the 7th century. The Fortica fortress, part of the fortification walls, offers an unforgettable view of the white stone city, while the city observatory is located in the Napoleon fortress. You will definitely be interested in the impressive Arsenal. The first public theatre in Europe was opened on the first floor of this renaissance building. It used to be a storage place for warships in the 16th century and could accommodate even the largest galleys due to its large size. LEARN ABOUT NEOLITHIC CERAMICS For those who are interested in archeological sites, Hvar is the place to go. A Neolithic archeological site, Grapčeva špilja, where unique ceramics decorated with spiral ornaments in red, yellow, brown, and white were found, is located near the city. Since such ornaments and engraving methods have only been found on the island of Hvar, archeologists have named this kind of Neolithic art "hvarska kultura" (Hvar's Culture). FOLLOW THE WINE ROADS If you make your way from Hvar to Brusje you will get to the road named "vinska" (Wine Road) because it leads to the biggest vineyards on the island. Wine-growing and wine-production on Hvar go back to the Greeks and Romans. Since these used to be the main financial sources in the Middle Ages, wine-production was controlled by the city statute. |
